Week at a Glance January 10-14, 2022

Well, this was not the start of 2022 we were hoping for with a delayed return to school and school closures because of inclement weather. Hopefully, we will turn a corner for bad weather and get things back to the normal rain of the Fraser Valley winter. We are looking forward to seeing our students back at school on Monday, January 10th!!

A few things to be mindful of when we return on Monday:

  • School will resume for all students and staff in person on Monday, January 10th.
  • Parents and caregivers should assess their children daily for illness before sending them to school. Utilize the provincial K-12 Health Check app for daily assessment of symptoms.
  • If a student, staff or other adult is sick, they must not enter the school.
  • Safety protocols continue much the same as the first part of the year, although we are making some adjustments to reduce crowding in the hallways and limiting group work where students are facing each other in close proximity.
  • The officials have stated there is NO plan for another province-wide shut-down where all students will be sent home to work online.
  • What may happen is that individual classes or schools may be sent home at some point to work online for a short period of time for one of many reasons (an outbreak in a class or school, school staffing shortage due to illness, or transportation shortages due to illness).
  • If one of our classes or school has to work online, each class has a plan to ensure learning will continue during this time.
  • Currently, all students are still expected to attend school, there is no learn from home option (unless directed by the health authorities or district that a whole class or school must move to online learning for a short period of time)
  • Please share this information with your children, and talk about the importance of our safety protocol (washing their hands upon arrival to school, throughout the day and especially before eating, and properly wearing their mask at all times (with the exception of eating and P.E. class).
  • Please send all students to school with at least one mask as well as a back up or two for their desks. Masks often break, get dirty or lost.

As always, we are wanting to do everything, we can to keep our students and staff safe. Again, thank you for your patience and for doing your part in keeping everyone else safe. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Best wishes,

Jason Kemp

Illness & Self-Assessment

A daily health check is a tool to reduce the likelihood of a person with COVID-19 coming to school when they are infectious.

  • Parents and caregivers should assess their children daily for illness before sending them to school. Utilize the provincial K-12 Health Check app for daily assessment of symptoms.
  • If a student, staff or other adult is sick, they must not enter the school.
  • Students, staff or other adults should stay at home when sick, as this is one of the most important ways to reduce the introduction to and the spread of COVID-19 in schools. The following resources provide guidance regarding specific symptoms of illness

Parent Advisory Council

Our PAC does an amazing job supporting our students and representing the parents voice at the school level. Because you have a child enrolled at Cultus Lake, you are already a member of our school’s PAC. I encourage you to attend one of our monthly PAC meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 13th at 6pm on Zoom. Please go to https://sd33-ca.zoom.us/j/69115338055?pwd=TmVCZFdyLzJYN0NQSkNVMTVYODV6dz09 to access the meeting.

Infant Massage

The Fraser Valley Child Development Centre will be offering an Infant Massage class at Cultus Lake Community School. The sessions will be starting on Monday January 17th until February 14th from 11am-12:15pm. It is a 5 week program for children who are in the pre-crawling stage. In the sessions you will learn the power of nurturing touch and communication with your baby. You can register by calling Ali Edelman at 604-824-8760 ext 3251 or email aedelman@fvcdc.org.

Nightly reading is the best indicator of school success.  ALL students should be reading at home, and this can take on many different forms (reading to self / reading to others / being read to / reading the pictures).   This year, we have started a new "Reading Bingo program."  Hopefully these cards encourage your child with some "creative" ways to read for 15-minutes each night.  Please ensure that these cards are returned to school at the end of each month and your child will be entered to win some prizes.  If you lose your card, you can always print one out from the library page of the school website.

Do you secretly like to organize your spice jars alphabetically?  Maybe you LOVE to wrap presents?  If so, Mrs. Knodel has library jobs for you that can be done at home or at school.  Please contact her at jodi_knodel@sd33.bc.ca if you would like to help out in our school library this year.  Training is provided.

Chilliwack Chiefs Adopt a School

We are very excited to be part of the Chilliwack Chiefs Adopt a School program this year. Our school will have access to 10 tickets per game to watch our local Chilliwack Chiefs hockey team at the Chilliwack Coliseum. We will raffle these tickets off each month. A big thank you to Lakeside Beach Club for sponsoring this program and giving our student this amazing opportunity.

Online Payment

You are now able to pay school fees (including School Supplies) online. The SD33 QUICKPAY link can be found by going to our school website or by following the link. If your child takes the bus, then you will already have an account. If not, then you will need to create an account. To do this you will need your child’s student number. You can contact Angela at the office or your child’s teacher to get this information.

PAC Facebook Page

Our PAC also updates our School’s PAC Facebook Page. Please follow the page to find out some of the events, fundraisers and opportunities happening at our school and around our community.

Inclement Weather Guidelines

Inclement Weather Guidelines for 2021/2022 can be found here.

Inclement weather conditions such as freezing rain, significant snowfall or high wind can occur during the fall and winter months. In such conditions, decisions on the opening or closure of school district facilities are made by the Superintendent of Schools in consultation with management and supervisory staff who have checked first-hand on the driving conditions, walking/sidewalk conditions, and general condition of buildings and accessibility to sites. For more details on how this is done, click here. Please listen to the local radio stations or refer to the school district’s website (www.sd33.bc.ca) for school closures.
