Week at a Glance December 6-10, 2021

It’s beginning to look and sound a lot like Christmas around the halls at Cultus Lake Community School. The students decorated classrooms and hallways this afternoon and have been practicing their Christmas songs throughout the week for our virtual concert and practicing our Christmas carolling to start our days. Again, thank you for your patience over the last couple of weeks as we navigated the extreme weather. We learned that we also need to check the transportation app and website for up-to-date bussing information. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

Jason Kemp

Principal

Illness & Self-Assessment

A daily health check is a tool to reduce the likelihood of a person with COVID-19 coming to school when they are infectious.

  • Parents and caregivers should assess their children daily for illness before sending them to school. Utilize the provincial K-12 Health Check app for daily assessment of symptoms.
  • If a student, staff or other adult is sick, they must not enter the school.
  • Students, staff or other adults should stay at home when sick, as this is one of the most important ways to reduce the introduction to and the spread of COVID-19 in schools. The following resources provide guidance regarding specific symptoms of illness

Food Drive

We started our Can Food Drive this week. We will be accepting cash donations as well. For each dollar brought in we will count the donation as three items of food. Our goal as a school is to collect 1000 can goods for the Salvation Army’s Food Bank. Please send non-perishable food items to your child’s classroom. There is also a class competition. The class that brings in the most food will get an additional gym class with Mr. Kemp.

Windward Lavender Fundraiser

Our PAC is running another Holiday Fundraiser. Locally grown lavender and grand fir essential oils create exceptional, all-natural products. Let’s support our school. Visit www.windwardlavender.com and use the Promo Code: CULTUSPAC for 15% discount. Add a note at check out with your child’s name and teacher. Choose School Fundraiser as the shipping option. This will be valid until December 13th and orders will be sent home on December 16th.

Growing Smiles Fundraiser

The PAC is starting their Growing Smile Fundraiser starting next week. They are selling beautiful, locally grown plants to help raise money for our outdoor education space. Please visit https://cultuslakeschool.growingsmilesfundraising.com/home to purchase some amazing plants and support our school. Forms should be going home early next week. When ordering online, and paying cash or cheque, please include a note to let us know that it is for the Growing Smiles Fundraiser. If you want to e-transfer, please include Growing Smiles in the memo field.  We extended our fundraisers. Orders will be ready to be picked up on December 7th in front of the school.

You will see our school name when you check out. Please make sure you fill in all the required info to make sure your order comes to the school labeled and ready to enjoy!

Infant Massage

The Fraser Valley Child Development Centre will be offering an Infant Massage class at Cultus Lake Community School. The sessions will be starting on Monday January 17th until February 14th from 11am-12:15pm. It is a 5 week program for children who are in the pre-crawling stage. In the sessions you will learn the power of nurturing touch and communication with your baby. You can register by calling Ali Edelman at 604-824-8760 ext 3251 or email aedelman@fvcdc.org.

Library

Nightly reading is the best indicator of school success.  ALL students should be reading at home, and this can take on many different forms (reading to self / reading to others / being read to / reading the pictures).   This year, we have started a new "Reading Bingo program."  Hopefully these cards encourage your child with some "creative" ways to read for 15-minutes each night.  Please ensure that these cards are returned to school at the end of each month and your child will be entered to win some prizes.  If you lose your card, you can always print one out from the library page of the school website.

Do you secretly like to organize your spice jars alphabetically?  Maybe you LOVE to wrap presents?  If so, Mrs. Knodel has library jobs for you that can be done at home or at school.  Please contact her at jodi_knodel@sd33.bc.ca if you would like to help out in our school library this year.  Training is provided.

Chilliwack Chiefs Adopt a School

We are very excited to be part of the Chilliwack Chiefs Adopt a School program this year. Our school will have access to 10 tickets per game to watch our local Chilliwack Chiefs hockey team at the Chilliwack Coliseum. We will raffle these tickets off each month. A big thank you to Lakeside Beach Club for sponsoring this program and giving our student this amazing opportunity.

Online Payment

You are now able to pay school fees (including School Supplies) online. The SD33 QUICKPAY link can be found by going to our school website or by following the link. If your child takes the bus, then you will already have an account. If not, then you will need to create an account. To do this you will need your child’s student number. You can contact Angela at the office or your child’s teacher to get this information.

Parent Advisory Council

Our PAC does an amazing job supporting our students and representing the parents voice at the school level. Because you have a child enrolled at Cultus Lake, you are already a member of our school’s PAC. I encourage you to attend one of our monthly PAC meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 13th at 6pm in our school’s library.

PAC Facebook Page

Our PAC also updates our School’s PAC Facebook Page. Please follow the page to find out some of the events, fundraisers and opportunities happening at our school and around our community.

Inclement Weather Guidelines

Inclement Weather Guidelines for 2021/2022 can be found here.

Inclement weather conditions such as freezing rain, significant snowfall or high wind can occur during the fall and winter months. In such conditions, decisions on the opening or closure of school district facilities are made by the Superintendent of Schools in consultation with management and supervisory staff who have checked first-hand on the driving conditions, walking/sidewalk conditions, and general condition of buildings and accessibility to sites. For more details on how this is done, click here. Please listen to the local radio stations or refer to the school district’s website (www.sd33.bc.ca) for school closures.
