The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien


This thrilling prequel to the Lord of the Rings is an exciting book to read out loud with your family.  It gets a bit scary in places, so it's one for older students who don't mind battles with goblins, giant spiders, and dragons.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick


This novel  features a young orphan who lives in the walls of the Paris train station.  He is swept up in a mysterious adventure involving his father, an automaton, and the birth of the cinema.
